# Getting Started with Skylar: A Guide for Sales Trainers

Describe your training problem to Skylar’s AI training consultant. Share the situation and how you assess it, and our team builds the AI simulation for you.

To get started with Skylar as a sales trainer, open the [AI training consultant](https://app.getskylar.com/build-your-simulation) and describe the problem you want to solve. Explain the situation learners should practise and how you would assess their response. You do not need to write a prompt or build the AI yourself. Our team creates the AI simulation around your idea.

This guide covers working with Skylar. For ideas on structuring your programme, see [getting started with AI roleplay for sales trainers](https://www.getskylar.com/blog/getting-started-with-ai-roleplay-for-sales-trainers). Its sample scenario, scoring rubric and two-week pilot are optional planning examples; you do not need to complete them before using the AI training consultant.

## What should you think about before starting?

Start with an idea of who you want to help and what you want them to do better. Think about where practice would fit into your training. You can describe this in your own words; a finished brief, scenario script or scoring rubric is not needed to get started.

These questions can help you explain the idea to the AI training consultant:

| Think about | For example |
| --- | --- |
| Who needs practice? | New account executives preparing for discovery calls |
| What is the problem? | They pitch before they understand the buyer’s problem |
| What situation should they face? | A busy operations manager who is hesitant to change |
| How would you assess it? | Does the rep ask follow-up questions and explore the impact before offering a solution? |
| Where could practice fit? | Between a discovery workshop and the next coaching session |

Share what you already know. If you have a teaching framework, explain the parts you want learners to practise. You can work through the remaining details with us as we develop the simulation.

## How does the first Skylar pilot work?

### 1\. Describe your problem to the AI training consultant

Open the [AI training consultant](https://app.getskylar.com/build-your-simulation). Describe the training problem, the situation you have in mind and how you would judge a good response. This gives us a starting point for the scenario and assessment.

For example: “My clients’ reps pitch too early in discovery calls. I want them to practise with a busy buyer. I’d assess whether they ask useful follow-up questions and understand the impact of the problem before offering a solution.”

An idea like this is enough to start. You can explain what you are working towards without writing an AI prompt or deciding every detail of the scenario.

### 2\. Let our team build the AI simulation, then review it

Our team takes your description and creates the AI simulation around it, including the scenario and assessment. You bring your training knowledge and the outcome you want; we handle creating the AI.

Once it is ready to review, try it and tell us whether the situation feels right and the assessment reflects how you coach. Try different responses to see whether the feedback recognises the behaviours you care about. Share anything that needs adjusting with our team before learners start.

We can work through the pilot’s scope, timing and learner group with you as the idea takes shape.

### 3\. Run a baseline, then teach and practise

Give learners a first attempt before the coaching. Explain how their recordings and results will be used and who will see them. Then teach your method, let them practise and review the gaps that need human coaching.

Start with a small cohort. You want to find confusing instructions or scoring problems while they are easy to fix.

### 4\. Review the results and decide what to change

Compare the baseline and final assessment using the same rubric and comparable difficulty. Look at participation, skill scores and examples of changed behaviour. Review a sample of conversations yourself; do not base a client report on the score alone.

Decide whether to improve the scenario, add another skill or expand to another group. A successful pilot should tell you what to do next, including when more work is needed.

## Where does Skylar fit into your training business?

You keep responsibility for the coaching method and the client relationship. Skylar provides a place for learners to practise and receive feedback between the moments when you can coach them yourself. For the broader distinction, read [what AI actually does for sales coaches](https://www.getskylar.com/blog/what-does-ai-actually-do-for-sales-coaches).

### Workshops and live training

Use a baseline attempt to choose where to spend workshop time. During the session, alternate teaching, practice and a short debrief. Afterwards, agree a practice schedule and a review date with the client.

Do not turn the debrief into a leaderboard reading. Pick a moment from a conversation, explain what happened and let the learner try again. That connects the AI feedback to your coaching.

For a reported example, see [the Just Eat programme with It’s Not What You Think](https://www.getskylar.com/blog/just-eat-takeaway-33-9-skill-improvement-case-study). It describes a live workshop followed by AI practice, with the group size and practice-score results. Those results describe that programme, not a guarantee for the next cohort.

### Courses and learning cohorts

Add a practice task after a lesson so learners can try the behaviour they have just studied. Keep the task narrow: after a module on discovery, assess discovery rather than the entire sales process.

Learners can practise different buyer situations while following the same coaching method. Before combining the results, check that the scenarios are comparable. A harder buyer should not make one learner look worse simply because they drew a different exercise.

Discuss course hosting, integrations and any additional delivery requirements with us when agreeing scope and pricing. Do not assume they are included in a standard pilot.

### Your own coaching methodology

Describe how you teach the skill and how you recognise a good attempt. A few examples of what a rep does well or gets wrong help our team understand your method. You do not need to turn the framework into an AI prompt yourself.

For example, “understand the impact” needs an observable test: the rep asks about the consequences of the problem, listens to the answer and checks their understanding before pitching. That is much easier to assess than whether they used a particular phrase.

Review any material licensed from another training provider before uploading it. Agree access and permitted use for your own material too.

### Bespoke client programmes

Start with the client situation you uncovered in discovery. Define the buyer, the decision they face and the information a rep needs to uncover. Then test whether the practice stays faithful to that situation.

Use the results to prepare your next coaching session. If several reps miss the same question, coach that skill as a group. If one rep understands the method but struggles to apply it, use their attempt for a focused conversation.

## What should you report to the client?

Separate three things:

- **Participation:** who attempted the practice, how often and who needs help getting started.
- **Practice performance:** how the assessed behaviours changed, with examples a coach has reviewed.
- **On-the-job outcomes:** whether those behaviours appear in real calls and whether relevant business measures changed.

A practice-score improvement is not the same as a revenue increase. If you want to claim commercial impact, agree the baseline, observation period and other factors that could affect the result with the client.

Include the number of learners assessed at both points, not just the people who improved most. Keep the rubric stable, and explain changes to the scenario or assessment. This makes the report useful even when the result is mixed.

## Should you use competitions and leaderboards?

They can give a cohort a reason to return to practice. They can also encourage learners to chase a score instead of improving the behaviour you teach.

Decide whether rankings suit your group. If you use them, keep the challenge tied to one skill and pair it with feedback. Check participation and the quality of attempts rather than assuming a competition improves learning for everyone.

## How do branding, client access and your IP fit in?

If you want to deliver practice under your own brand, explore [Skylar’s white-label option](https://www.getskylar.com/white-label). Confirm the branding, client setup and support scope as part of your agreement.

Before adding confidential material, agree who can view the methodology, learner recordings and reports; how data is used and retained; and how it can be exported or deleted. Access controls help manage distribution, but no platform can promise that an authorised person will never copy information they can see.

If you are comparing providers, use the [buying criteria for an AI roleplay platform](https://www.getskylar.com/blog/buying-criteria-for-a-sales-practice-platform) to test the same requirements with each one.

## Start with one programme

Start with an idea for a situation your learners need to practise. [Describe it to the AI training consultant](https://app.getskylar.com/build-your-simulation), including the problem you want to solve and how you would assess it. Our team will take care of creating the AI around it.

If you would like to talk it through with us, [book a conversation about your training programme](https://calendly.com/ivelin-pxm/15min) or email [founders@getskylar.com](mailto:founders@getskylar.com).
